This article is the decision-stage answer for two-sided marketplaces (consumer, B2B, vertical) with supply-and-demand acquisition mandates. If you are reading it, you have already worked out that you need senior marketing leadership and you are now triangulating who, when, and at what price. The honest answer is that an engagement at the €20,000/month tier (Hiring & team building) is what you are evaluating, and below I explain when that is the right call.
The TL;DR
Hire an interim marketing leader for Marketplaces when one of these is true:
- You have a leadership vacuum — CMO left, Head of Growth left, or founder is the bottleneck.
- You have a specific transformation — rebrand, post-merger integration, new market entry, or MarTech replatform.
- You have a time-bound window — a fundraise, a launch, a regulatory submission, or an investor update.
- You have growth that has stalled for two consecutive quarters and the team cannot diagnose why.
If none of these is true, you do not need this engagement. Hire a permanent CMO or stay the course.
What the €20,000/month tier actually buys
The €20,000/month engagement is structured around hiring & team building. For two-sided marketplaces (consumer, B2B, vertical) with supply-and-demand acquisition mandates this typically means:
- Weekly working sessions with the founder/CEO, fortnightly with the leadership team.
- A 30-day audit covering Braze stack, performance marketing for supply performance, organisational design, and budget allocation.
- A 60-day rollout: stack consolidation, channel reset, agentic workflow prototypes, hiring plan, and the first board-grade dashboard.
- A 90-day handover (or extension) plan.
You are not paying for slideware. You are paying for someone who has done this before — across Vinted's France launch (where I ran influencer marketing from zero foothold and helped force the United Wardrobe acquisition) and 50+ other organisations — to make the unpopular decisions inside the first two weeks.
The economics, plainly
For a Marketplaces business doing €5M–€100M in revenue, the realistic alternatives are:
| Option | Annualised cost | Time-to-impact | Termination risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Permanent CMO (Tier-1 talent) | €280K–€450K + equity + recruiter fee | 4–9 months search, 90-day ramp | 6–12 months severance |
| Interim at €20,000/month | €20,000 × 6 months | 1–2 weeks | 30-day notice |
| Marketing agency (retainer) | €120K–€240K | 4–8 weeks | 30–90 days |
| Stay the course | Opportunity cost of stalled growth | N/A | N/A |
What I will not do at this tier
- Promise specific ROAS or CAC targets in the first 30 days. Anyone who does is guessing.
- Replace your team without a written 90-day plan reviewed with you.
- Sign a contract that does not include a 30-day exit clause.
- Take an engagement where Marketplaces-specific regulatory or platform exposure has not been mapped.
What I will do, in the first 14 days
- A written stack and channel audit with one page of executive summary and one appendix of evidence.
- An organisational diagnostic identifying the single highest-leverage hire or workflow change.
- A direct conversation with your CFO or VC lead about expected payback period.
- A 90-day plan with weekly milestones and a board-grade dashboard prototype.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. How fast can you start?
Inside a week for most engagements. Inside 72 hours for crisis mandates. The contract is the bottleneck, not the work.
2. What if it's not a fit after 30 days?
Every engagement has a 30-day exit clause. If we are not a fit we close out, you keep the work-product, and you owe one final invoice.
3. Will you do equity instead of cash?
Occasionally yes, for pre-seed / seed-stage businesses where the engagement is sub-€10K/month. Above that the engagement is cash-only.
4. How is the €20,000/month tier different from the next one up?
Scope. €20,000/month covers Hiring & team building. The next tier up adds the next layer of responsibility — agency management, team coaching, hiring, or board reporting depending on the rung.
