Monday: Map
The week begins by setting a foundation of shared understanding. The team agrees on a long-term goal and then maps out the customer journey and the various actors involved. We did this at Vinted when exploring a new user engagement feature; by mapping the entire user lifecycle, we could pinpoint the exact moment of leverage for our intervention. The day culminates in selecting a single, critical target for the week’s efforts. This focus is crucial; instead of trying to boil the ocean, the team zeros in on one manageable piece of the puzzle.
Tuesday: Sketch
With the problem framed, Tuesday is all about generating solutions. Instead of a chaotic group brainstorm, the sprint employs a “work alone, together” approach. Each team member individually sketches detailed, competing solutions to the problem. This process encourages deep thinking and allows for a diversity of ideas to emerge, not just the ones from the most extroverted team members. It’s a powerful way to leverage the collective intelligence of the entire team, from the CEO to the engineer.
Wednesday: Decide
Wednesday is the turning point. The team critiques the solutions sketched on Tuesday and decides which one has the best chance of achieving the long-term goal. This isn’t a free-for-all debate; the process uses structured methods like dot-voting and a “decider” (typically a senior leader or product owner) to make the final call. Once a winning concept is chosen, the team creates a storyboard, a step-by-step plan that will become the blueprint for the prototype. This storyboard is the critical link between the abstract idea and the tangible product.
Thursday: Prototype
This is where the idea comes to life. The team builds a high-fidelity prototype in just one day. The key is a “fake it” philosophy. You’re not building a fully functional product; you’re creating a realistic façade that gives users the impression of a real product. This could be a series of clickable screens, a physical mock-up, or even a scripted role-play. When I worked with a team at a large financial institution, we used Keynote to build a surprisingly realistic prototype of a new mobile banking app. The goal is to create something that is real enough to test with users, allowing you to learn without the heavy investment of coding and infrastructure.
Friday: Test
The final day is the moment of truth. The team gets to watch real customers interact with the prototype. Five one-on-one interviews are typically enough to start seeing significant patterns. You’re not looking for statistical significance; you’re looking for qualitative insights and direct feedback. This is the shortcut to learning. By the end of the day, you will have a clear understanding of what’s working, what’s not, and what to do next. You’ve replaced assumptions and debates with real-world evidence.
