Lift Studies

Controlled experiments measuring the incremental impact of advertising on conversions

What It Does

A Lift Study is a controlled experiment designed to measure the true, incremental impact of your advertising. It works by splitting your audience into two groups: a treatment group that sees your ads and a control group that does not. By comparing the conversion rates or other key metrics between these two groups, you can isolate the causal effect of your campaign, moving beyond correlation to understand causation.

Why It Matters for Marketing Operations

For a marketing leader, a Lift Study is the closest you can get to scientific proof that your ad spend is actually driving results. In a world of noisy data and flawed attribution models, it provides a clear, defensible answer to the question: "What would have happened if we hadn't run this campaign?" This is crucial for justifying budgets, optimizing channel mix, and demonstrating the marketing department's direct contribution to pipeline and revenue. It cuts through the vanity metrics and focuses on incremental impact, which is the only metric that truly matters to the business.

How I Deploy It

I deploy Lift Studies directly within the ad platforms that support them, primarily Google Ads and Meta Ads. For a B2B client, a typical use case is measuring the impact of a LinkedIn campaign on demo requests. We'll set up a Conversion Lift Study, letting the platform manage the audience split. The key is to ensure the conversion event is properly configured in our marketing automation platform, like HubSpot, and that the data is passed back to the ad platform. This allows us to see not just the lift in form fills, but the actual impact on qualified leads and sales opportunities, providing a much richer analysis than the platform's default reporting.

When to Use It vs. Alternatives

A Lift Study is the go-to method for measuring the impact of a specific, channel-based campaign. It's perfect for answering questions like, "Is my YouTube campaign driving incremental sign-ups?" However, it's not a silver bullet. For broader, more strategic questions about your overall marketing mix, a Marketing Mix Model (MMM) is more appropriate. And for understanding the customer journey across multiple touchpoints, Multi-Touch Attribution (MTA) can provide valuable insights. But when you need a clean, causal read on a single campaign's effectiveness, the experimental rigor of a Lift Study is unmatched.

The Operator's Take

Attribution is a messy business, and most models are just educated guesses. A Lift Study, on the other hand, is an experiment. It's the most intellectually honest way to measure the value of your advertising, and it's the kind of evidence that will make a CFO sit up and take notice. If you're not running lift studies, you're flying blind.
