Screaming Frog

Website crawler for technical SEO auditing, finding broken links, and analyzing site structure

What It Does

Screaming Frog is a desktop-based website crawler that I use to conduct in-depth technical SEO audits. It spiders a website’s URLs and fetches key onsite elements to analyze and audit from an SEO perspective. In practice, it’s the fastest way to get a comprehensive look at a site’s structure, finding everything from broken links and server errors to duplicate content and metadata issues.

Why It Matters for Marketing Operations

For a marketing leader, a technically sound website is the foundation of all digital efforts. If search engines can't properly crawl and index your site, your content and campaigns are dead on arrival. I use Screaming Frog to ensure that the technical foundation is solid, directly impacting organic search performance, which in turn drives pipeline and revenue. It’s the tool that prevents you from losing money on technical SEO issues that are entirely preventable.

How I Deploy It

In my engagements, I deploy Screaming Frog during the initial discovery phase to get a baseline of a client's website health. I often connect it to the Google Analytics 4 and Google Search Console APIs to pull in performance data alongside the crawl data. This allows me to identify underperforming pages that also have technical issues. For more advanced workflows, I export the crawl data as a CSV and use n8n to push it into a BigQuery database, where I can join it with data from HubSpot to create a holistic view of content performance.

When to Use It vs. Alternatives

Screaming Frog is my go-to for deep, technical, on-demand crawls. When I need to get into the weeds of a site’s architecture, it’s unparalleled. Alternatives like Ahrefs and SEMrush are excellent all-in-one platforms for ongoing monitoring and competitor analysis, but they don’t offer the same level of granular control and raw data access for a pure technical audit. If you have a dedicated SEO team and a large, complex site, you need Screaming Frog; if you're a smaller operation that needs a broader set of marketing tools, SEMrush might be a better fit.

The Operator's Take

Screaming Frog is the operator's scalpel for technical SEO. It’s not a flashy, all-in-one solution, but it is an indispensable tool for anyone serious about ensuring their website is technically optimized for search engines. In my experience across 50+ organizations, the insights from a single Screaming Frog crawl can unlock more organic growth than months of content creation on a broken foundation.
