The world's leading platform for version control, code collaboration, and CI/CD with Actions
GitHub is a cloud-based platform for hosting and managing source code using the Git version control system. At its core, it allows developers to store their code, track every change, and collaborate with others on projects of any scale. It's built around features like pull requests, which provide a structured process for reviewing and merging code changes, and Actions, a powerful CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment) engine for automating software workflows.
In modern marketing, code is everywhere, from the company website to the automation scripts that power the revenue engine. GitHub provides the critical infrastructure for managing this code with discipline, ensuring that a bad update to a lead scoring script or a website tracking snippet doesn't break the pipeline. For a CMO, it represents stability, auditability, and control over the technical assets that marketing depends on. It turns marketing operations from a series of ad-hoc changes into a professional, engineering-grade function, which is essential for scaling predictably.
I use GitHub as the single source of truth for all technical marketing assets. This includes the codebase for our clients' marketing websites, often built with Next.js and deployed via Vercel, which integrates seamlessly with GitHub for automated deployments. I also store all our workflow automation scripts, whether for n8n or custom Python jobs, in repositories. This allows my team to collaborate on automation logic, review changes before they go live, and quickly roll back if an issue arises. We use GitHub Actions to run tests and deploy these scripts to production environments, often connecting them to data warehouses like BigQuery or CRMs like HubSpot. It provides a complete audit trail, which is non-negotiable when dealing with revenue-critical systems.
For 99% of marketing teams, GitHub is the default choice. Its network effect is unmatched, the integration ecosystem is vast, and the free tier is generous enough for most marketing use cases. GitLab is a strong competitor, particularly for organizations that want a single application for the entire DevOps lifecycle, including more advanced security and planning features out of the box. Bitbucket is another alternative, often chosen by teams already heavily invested in the Atlassian suite (Jira, Confluence). However, unless you have a specific, compelling reason to choose a competitor, starting with GitHub is the most pragmatic and future-proof decision. Its dominance in the open-source world means your team is more likely to be familiar with it.
Treating your marketing team's code as a second-class citizen is a recipe for disaster. GitHub is the foundational layer for bringing engineering discipline to marketing operations. It's not just for developers; it's for any operator who manages technical assets that can impact revenue, and in today's world, that's almost everyone in marketing.
