Open-source headless CMS for building customizable APIs and content management
Strapi is an open-source headless CMS that I use to manage and deliver content to any frontend application. It decouples the content management backend from the presentation layer, allowing my teams to build custom APIs and define content structures that can be deployed across websites, mobile apps, and any other digital channel. In practice, it’s a flexible content hub that gives developers full control over the data models and APIs.
For marketing operations, Strapi means speed and control. It eliminates the bottleneck of traditional, monolithic CMS platforms, allowing us to launch campaigns and new web properties much faster. By connecting our content repository directly to our marketing automation and analytics stacks via APIs, we can create highly personalized and dynamic customer experiences. This direct API access is critical for building a robust, revenue-generating marketing engine that can adapt to new channels and strategies without requiring a full platform migration.
I deploy Strapi as the central content layer for marketing and product teams. For example, I often connect Strapi to a Next.js frontend hosted on Vercel for our corporate marketing sites. We use its flexible content types to build out everything from blog posts and landing pages to dynamic resource centers. I frequently integrate it with Segment to pipe content engagement data into our data warehouse in BigQuery, and use n8n to create workflows that automatically syndicate new content to our social channels and email marketing platform, HubSpot.
Strapi is my go-to when a client needs a highly customizable, self-hosted, or open-source solution. Its strength lies in its flexibility and the control it gives developers. If a marketing team is less technical and prefers a fully managed, SaaS solution with a more polished user interface out of the box, I might recommend Contentful or Sanity. However, for organizations that want to own their content infrastructure and have the development resources to build a truly bespoke solution, Strapi is the superior choice.
Strapi is for builders. It’s not a plug-and-play solution for teams that want to avoid technical complexity, but a powerful, flexible engine for marketing teams that see content as a core part of their data and technology stack. In my experience, the organizations that get the most out of Strapi are those that are ready to treat their content with the same rigor and discipline as their code.
